Reliability of electricity supply to critical systems was enhanced at the central Klaipėda terminal

Electricity Distribution Operator (ESO) has abolished reliability categories for commercial entities since January 2026, therefore, in case of a failure, the time for elimination thereof within the city limits of Klaipėda has increased from 2 to 6 hours. Taking this into consideration, Central Klaipėda Terminal started implementing a project in 2025, which, in the event of a regular power outage, will help ensure autonomous power supply of the key operating systems of the terminal. The project has already been successfully implemented; thus, the terminal will be more resistant to power supply disruptions in 2026.

Terminal Management System (TMS), which has been operating at Central Klaipėda Terminal since 2018 and has artificial intelligence functions, is the main tool ensuring smooth management of transport, loading and logistics processes. The system includes gate control, import and export flow also yard management, ship loading planning, photo capture for damage adjustment and data exchange with shipping line systems. TMS allows real-time monitoring of all terminal processes and ensures accurate cargo movement.

In order to guarantee the uninterrupted operation of this system, two diesel generators have been installed in the terminal to power critical IT infrastructure. In the event of a power outage from the city grid, the generators automatically take over the load and allow the TMS functions to remain operational. A 15 kW generator is installed near the administrative building, and a 30 kW device is installed near the control and inspection post to ensure the operation of systems with higher energy requirements.

“The terminal must operate without interruptions. TMS is the basis of our daily operations – from vehicle entry through the gate to ship loading planning and data exchange with customers, so the reliability of the power supply is of critical importance here,” explained the Chief Executive Officer of Central Klaipėda Terminal Karolis Grigalauskas.

According to the CEO of the company manager, these solutions are an important part of the long-term terminal modernization and service improvement strategy. Backup power supply means that, even in emergency situations, it is possible to maintain control, transparency of operations and high quality of services for customers. It is noteworthy that since 2023, about 8 percent of the total electricity consumption of the terminal is produced deploying own solar power plant.
