According to the CEO of “Achema” Audronė Kuskytė, the European fertilizer industry has faced significant economic challenges during the recent years. In 2024, “Achema”, like most European fertilizer producers, was operating at partial capacity.
“The biggest impact on our results was the import of fertilizers to Europe from third countries, especially Russia, where the product is made from cheap raw materials and environmental taxes are not paid, therefore, European producers faced a problem of competitive nature,” elaborated A. Kuskytė.
The company purchases all the necessary natural gas from suppliers in Norway, the USA, Great Britain, Poland and Germany. Natural gas is the main raw material in the production of nitrogen fertilizers, the share of gas price in the cost price of fertilizers is approximately 70 percent.
In 2024, “Achema” maintained a wide range of geographical markets, exporting the products to 38 countries, with France, Great Britain, Germany, Poland and Scandinavian countries remaining the main export destinations. Exports to distant markets, including Australia, Canada and South American countries – Argentina, Uruguay, Peru, Suriname and the Dominican Republic – increased significantly.
Even during this complicated period, the company continued to consistently invest in production renewal, energy resource and environmental impact reduction projects, also modernisation of the energy system. In 2024, the total amount of investments reached 12.5 million euros.
