“KLASCO-3” tugboat as good as new: qualification repairs completed successfully
This week the team of company “Klaipėdos laivų remontas” successfully completed the scheduled repair of marine tugboat “KLASCO-3” owned by company “KLASCO”.
Marketing and Project Manager of “Klaipėdos laivų remontas” Marius Vibrys explained that the respectful repair of the tugboat was a dock repair – such repair is carried out every five years following international requirements, therefore, this was the second dock repair of this marine tugboat since 2015.
During the repair work, the entire exterior of the tugboat was thoroughly renovated: the hull, deck, superstructure, etc. were cleaned and repainted, defects identified in the engine room were eliminated, electrical installation, camera installation, air system inspections were performed, anchor chains were renewed and inspected, tanks were cleaned, main engine services were performed, pumps and valves were replaced, and other works were carried out. The tugboat steering gear mechanisms were also removed, thoroughly checked and cleaned, and the seals were replaced – according to M. Vibrys, that is one of the most complex stages of the repair, requiring very specific competencies, held by the specialists of the company.
“Ship repair work is common and casual for our team, but at the same time it is exceptional, since each ship is unique, has different mechanisms, parts, differs in age, etc. Consequently, ship repair requires specific knowledge, skills, precise engineering perception, as well as creativity,” summarised M. Vibrys.
The repair of the tugboat lasted almost two months. During this entire time, the specialists of “Klaipėdos laivų remontas” maintained a close cooperation with “Jūrų laivybos registras”, which monitors and ensures the quality of the repair.
“KLASCO-3” marine tugboat, which was acquired by “KLASCO” in 2015, is intended for port and marine towing, ship escorting, icebreaking and cargo transportation, including a towing capacity of up to sixty tons.
