“Litgrid” has connected new transformer substation in Piktupėnai to the transmission grid
Lithuanian electricity transmission system operator “Litgrid” announced the completion of the Piktupėnai transformer substation construction project in Pagėgiai District, thus opening up new opportunities for business development and strengthening the electricity transmission grid in the region. It is planned to connect a new wind farm with a total capacity of 264 MW to the substation.
“A completely new 330 kV transformer substation has been built in Piktupėnai, which is necessary for connecting a new wind farm to the electricity transmission grid. That will ensure a stable and reliable supply of generated electricity. Every newly connected park brings us closer to an important goal – becoming an energetically independent country. The development of renewable energy in Lithuania is one of the fastest in Europe, thus, I am thrilled to see the efforts of developers to create green energy production capacities pro-actively, enhancing our energetical independence and contributing to climate change mitigation,” elaborated the CEO of “Litgrid” Rokas Masiulis.
One of the largest wind farms in Lithuania, currently under construction by developer UAB “LT Energija”, will be connected to the newly installed transformer substation. The company coordinated and organized the installation work necessary to ensure smooth and efficient implementation of the project.
“We have completed the construction of 330 kV transformer substation in Piktupėnai, which began in 2024, on time and successfully – one of the initial, essential and longest construction stages in the development of the 264 MW wind farm in Pagėgiai and necessary in order to connect the wind farms under construction to the transmission grid on time. The work carried out consistently and based on mutual trust will allow the company to deliver the first kilowatt-hours of electricity produced by wind farms to the transmission grid in the nearest future,” explained the CEO of “LT Energija” Mindaugas Juodis.
The new transformer substation was installed in Birštoniškės Village, Pagėgiai Municipality.
During the construction work, a new 30/330 kV transformer substation was built in Piktupėnai and connected to 330 kV electricity transmission line of Šyša–Bitėnai. The new transformer substation will ensure the reliability of the transmission grid and increase energy security.
The permissible generation capacity of solar and wind power plants already operating in Lithuania, including transmission and distribution grid, has already reached 4.0 GW and currently accounts for more than half of the total electricity generation capacity of the country.
National Energetical Independence Strategy predicts that by 2030, the growth of consumption and export opportunities will create the conditions for connecting about 10 GW of renewable energy generation capacity to Lithuanian electricity transmission grid. Then, the entire electricity demand of Lithuania will be met by deploying the production of RES power plants.
