KLASCO terminal receives record cargo for onshore wind farm

Klaipėda Sea Freight Company (KLASCO) has received a record cargo – the largest Handysize vessel ever handled has docked at the Smeltė Peninsula in the southern part of the Port of Klaipėda, bringing 60 parts of an onshore wind tower. The cargo is destined for the Pagėgiai wind farm being developed by Achema Group.

According to KLASCO’s CEO Vitalij Muštuk, this is the largest oversized cargo to reach the company’s terminal on the Smeltė Peninsula so far, and it is of special strategic importance.

“In 2023, we took a strategic decision to modernise the former International Sea Ferry site. Since then, we have been gradually moving towards our goals and today we are entering a new cargo segment – the handling of oversized and heavy cargo. Our investment in the modernisation of the Smeltė site and the successful handling of the first onshore wind farm cargo show that KLASCO is fully prepared to handle the most complex wind energy projects. This not only contributes to strengthening Lithuania’s energy independence, but also consolidates the position of the Port of Klaipėda as an important green energy logistics centre,” stated Mr. Muštuk.

The handling of oversized onshore wind turbine parts requires exceptional precision and the highest level of expertise. According to Dalia Gun, KLASCO’s Commercial Director, the company’s team has been preparing intensively for this project over the past year, providing specialised training for its employees, meticulous planning of the work, and adjusting the handling procedures in accordance with the special requirements for oversized and heavy loads.
