KLASCO handled the first batch of oversized cargo on Smeltė Peninsula
The mood of rebirth lingers over Smeltė Peninsula located in the southern part of Klaipėda port. Company “Klaipėdos jūrų krovinių kompanija” (KLASCO) completed the first stage of terminal modernisation and renewal works, assembled the newly purchased loading equipment, which is to be used for loading oversized and heavy cargo. KLASCO invested approximately 12 million EUR into terminal modernization.
“International ferry territory that was under stagnation for several years has finally come alive again as the infrastructure was renewed, modern loading equipment was purchased, allowing to offer an even wider variety of services for the market. The new equipment is not the only thing of significance, human recourses are also very important, therefore, we put a lot of focus on training and updating the qualification of the employees, who will be working with the new equipment. We are ready to offer high quality and fast loading solutions, successfully seek more cargo diversification and raise the bar for the quality of the provided services even higher,” proudly stated the Chief Executive Officer of KLASCO Vitalijus Muštuk.
As the summer is gaining pace, the first oversized cargo also arrived at the new terminal. It contained parts for Lithuanian onshore wind farm. Wind power tower that weighs 75 tons, has a diameter of 4.5 meters and is 18 meter-long was reloaded. The cargo was reloaded on the quay No. 151, where ships of 230 meters in length can moor, allowing maximum draft – 8 meters.
“Currently, two new “Liebherr” mobile cranes, three “Conecranes” container loaders, “Terberg” terminal tractors and “Seacom” terminal container semi-trailers are operated in the modernized terminal. Thus, we have already formed an extremely coherent complex that will allow us to ensure even smoother loading processes. Solid investments into the infrastructure for the production, assembly and storage of offshore wind power plants and their components are also planned,” summarised the future plans V. Muštuk.
KLASCO is the most diversified loading company in Klaipėda port and one of the biggest companies in the Baltic States according to the loading turnover. Currently the company loads bulk and compacted, liquid, general, ro-ro cargo. During the first half of this year the company reloaded 10 percent more cargo that during the same period last year.
