Klaipėda Central Terminal turns 10
Klaipėda Central Terminal is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, and throughout the month of June, the main terminal building is decorated with a glowing 10-year symbol.
The anniversary has just been celebrated with a gala event attended by the leaders of the City of Klaipėda, the Port of Klaipėda, the Klaipėda Chamber of Industry, Commerce and Crafts and other port handling companies and universities, as well as by the terminal’s customers and long-standing partners.
“Our port handling company remains an important logistics centre for Lithuania and the Port of Klaipėda. The efficiency of processes and the speed of ferry loading as well as the range of services provided have made the terminal one of the best wheeled machinery handling facilities in the Baltic Sea region since its opening,” says Karolis Grigalauskas, CEO of Klaipėda Central Terminal. The war in Ukraine and sanctions against the aggressors have brought their own adjustments, and in recent years there has been a decline in cargo traffic, but the terminal remains the main guarantee of military mobility and state security in the western region of Lithuania.
The construction of the terminal, which took place at a very fast pace, with the infrastructure and superstructure taking 5 years to complete, is one of the few new port complexes of this scale built in the Port of Klaipėda in the history of independent Lithuania.
During its decade of existence, the terminal has handled over 40 million tonnes of cargo, transported around 2.4 million passengers and handled over 14,000 ferry crossings. Every day, tourists arriving in Klaipėda can enjoy the attractions of the city and the region, and Klaipėda residents have the opportunity to reach Sweden and Germany not only by airline, but also by ferries departing from Klaipėda.
“Terminal management processes were digitised in 2018 with the introduction of modern IT systems, and today they are constantly being developed to consistently improve the quality of services provided. The sustainability of the terminal’s operations already meets the EU’s requirements for 2030, but despite this, new projects are already in the pipeline. For example, the Klaipėda State Seaport Authority is initiating a project to connect the ferries to the shore-side power supply, which will further reduce pollution in Klaipėda as early as 2025,” said the head of the Klaipėda Central Terminal.
In recognition of all the achievements and importance of the Central Klaipėda Terminal in logistics activities, the company’s CEO K. Grigalauskas was awarded a nominal token of appreciation by the Klaipėda Chamber of Industry, Commerce and Crafts on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the terminal.
