“Agrochema” helps pupils to implement the beekeeping idea

Various organisations state that various species of wild bees, butterflies and other pollinator insects are rapidly going extinct. There are about 20 thousand species of insects who pollinate the crops and this way help to provide people with sufficient food, nevertheless, two fifths of these insects are on the verge of extinction. Even though the situation with domestic bees is better to a certain extent, we must take care of them as well.

“Agrochema” contributes to preserving various natural resources and projects enhancing the strength of community, therefore, when the company received the request from Kretinga Jurgis Pabrėža University Gymnasium to contribute to a beekeeping project, it provided the Gymnasium with the necessary seeds, plants and various beekeeping tools.

“Our gymnasium was the first one to get involved in the pilot city beekeeping promotion project organised by the Ministry of Environment. Nevertheless, without the support we would have been unable to achieve our goals. We would like to express our sincere gratitude to “Agrochema”, which did not only provide tools and products, but also contributed to the learning of the pupils, encouragement of their creativity, as well as the ability to perceive the importance of maintaining biodiversity,” told Simona Mikelkevičienė, the Head of Maintenance Department of Kretinga Jurgis Pabrėža University Gymnasium.

The outdoor territory of the Gymnasium is about 3 ha. Here the pupils arranged the zones of blossoming and honeydew plants, planted various plants, thus, providing more locations for collection of nectar for their residents – the bees. Even these are not vast lands for the bees, but even small areas of plants in bloom allow the two families of bees residing of the roof of the Gymnasium to collect the honey.

Kretinga Jurgis Pabrėža University Gymnasium has eco-entrepreneurship club, which offers educations and this way spreads the environment protection ideas across the entire district. The goods provided by “Agrochema” also contribute to educational activities: the members of the beekeeping club can organise educations about the bees from the important point of view of protecting the ecosystems and biodiversity. The pupils are acquainted with the life of the bees. There are conditions to have a close up touch and view of the bees. The laboratory carries out research, what plants are visited by the bees for honey collection, this creates an opportunity to get to know the plants and nature.
