The Klaipėda Stevedoring Company (KLASCO) is the first to apply the advanced ecological means in the port, namely used to cover cargoes with an ecologically-friendly film and prevent them from drying and dusting. Technology of the Dutch company “Den Baker Bedrijven BV” used in the Western European terminals was acquired taking into account the proximity of the Company’s cargo handling area to the residential quarter. Cellulose dissolved in the water is sprayed up to the top of the stack by a mobile device. This eliminates the dustiness of the cargo resulting from the drying of its top layer. “We aim to minimize the impact of the Company’s cargo handling on the level of city’s pollution, which in this dry summer is negative in all parts of the city, even in the more remote from the port. In addition to this new Dutch technology that helps to prevent dust pollution, we also use the other means, such as 6 water cannons that spray water on the bulk cargoes, a special wall that holds dust during loading, which further reduces the environmental impact. We also clean the access ways and roads, moisture and clean up not only our territory but also the streets of Vitės quarter,” says Vytautas Kaunas, the CEO of KLASCO. According to him, in the near future the Company will also purchase more cleaning machines that will moisturize and clean the territory. By September 14, a short-term and a long-term plan of measures to reduce the environmental impact will be prepared.
