An extraordinary event in the labour market: in 2019, nearly 3200 employees of ACHEMOS GRUPĖ were provided with voluntary health insurance. This is one of the largest Lithuanian-wide health insurance contracts.
As Auksė Glavinskienė, Director of Personnel Department of ACHEMOS GRUPĖ, points out, it is not only social benefits, but also job security and care for their health that are important to the employees today. Voluntary health insurance provides faster and more convenient access to the healthcare services of a better quality. The employers providing their employees with this insurance reinforce their loyalty and motivation, improve their own image, and can attract the wanted specialists more easily.
Several generations of one family
“As a result of offering the package of social services and value added to the employees, people work in our companies for decades. We have many elderly workers and there are even cases of several generations of the same family working at our company. As a large employer affecting to a large extent the well-being of certain regions of the country, we feel responsible for taking care of our employees properly,” says A. Glavinskienė.
For example, the employees of Achema, one of the largest factories of the group, have access to free health care at the company’s outpatient clinic. This is probably the only health care facility of this level in Lithuania owned by the employer.
There are over 2.8 thousand residents registered at the outpatient clinic, Achema employees make 72 percent of them. This establishment provides the residents with regular primary outpatient care and various secondary treatment services. At the clinic, there is a first aid post open 24 hours a day.
Last year, the patients visited the clinic more than 33,000 times. They consulted doctors in various fields and were examined. Last year, the company allocated almost 500 thousand euro to maintain the private clinic.
Voluntary health insurance as a means of motivating the employees has been applied in the companies managed by ACHEMOS GRUPĖ since 2012. It was first offered to Achema, AB, Klaipėda Stevedoring Company, AB (KLASCO), later to Agrochema, UAB, Achempak, UAB, Transachema, UAB, Iremas, UAB, Renerga, UAB and other companies. This year it broke a record. The specialists of Insurance Brokers Alliance, UADBB organised the procurement of voluntary health insurance services and agreed on the best health insurance conditions in terms of both the price and the services.
As a socially responsible employer, the company takes care of the mental and physical health of its employees by granting access to health services of the highest quality provided by the health care facilities in both public and private medical institutions. An insured worker can choose the best health professionals. Without a voluntary health insurance, it would be expensive to visit such specialists in private clinics, but the insurance covers this type of costs. In addition, in private medical institutions, it is easier to access doctors or medical procedures at a convenient time and the employees do not need to wait in long queues.
“Routine checks and health enhancement measures without charging extra motivate and encourage the employees to take care of their health to avoid getting sick and to stay at work even more. People feel appreciated. Taking care of the company by providing health insurance creates a feeling of security and a better working environment,” says A. Glavinskienė.
According to Jonas Plačiakis, the Head of the Insurance Brokers Alliance, who organised the procurement for the services, the company, which has insured the employees with voluntary health insurance, not only encourages them to take care of their health and raise their working capacity. This means of motivation can be used purposefully for collective disease prevention in order to prevent chronic and critical diseases and to increase productivity.
“We get the feedback from our customers saying that they suffer less loss because healthier employees create more value. Early diagnosis and prophylaxis of illnesses reduce the morbidity of the employees, and as they are provided with quick and high-quality help, the employees recover faster and return to work,” says J. Plačiakis.
According to experts, increase in salary or additional bonuses usually have a short-term effect. Insurance with relatively low costs helps create long-term and effective benefits for the employees. A company offering health insurance to its employees is more attractive than that which does not offer it. This helps maintain loyal employees and attract new wanted professionals.
