Out of all companies of UAB koncernas ACHEMOS GRUPĖ, AB “Achema”, the manufacturer of nitrogen fertilisers and other industrial chemicals, is the largest investor in environmental measures. The company particularly focuses on the reduction of energy consumption and modernisation of equipment. In 2015, not only new machinery began operating at the plant, but also laboratory equipment and measurement devices for determining environmental conditions and ensuring pollution prevention were renewed. The environmental impact of the company, by comparison with pollution indicators 10 to 20 years ago, decreased by several times.

In 2008, AB “Achema” signed its historical agreement with the Ministry of Environment of the Republic of Lithuania on investments in environmental protection. This means, that in implementing the Joint Implementation Mechanism project under the Kyoto Protocol the company sells emission reduction units (ERUs) issued to it and invests the proceeds in environmental projects. Two projects independently implemented by AB “Achema” under the Kyoto Protocol allowed the company to reduce carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere by 1.3 million tons just in a year. In 2006, the Helsinki Commission, which is responsible for the Baltic marine environment protection, deleted “Achema” from the list of “hot spots”.

Environmental initiatives of “Achema” were awarded on repeated occasions. Stevedoring operations are actively carried out on the site of AB Klaipėdos jūrų krovinių kompanija (Klaipėda Stevedoring Company) (KLASCO), which is why it is highly important that the company’s activities do not affect the ecosystem and population of the Curonian Lagoon. In order to reduce its environmental impact, KLASCO uses innovative stevedoring technologies and modern equipment. In 2013, the company implemented and received certification for its environmental management system in compliance with the requirements of the international standard ISO 14001:2004.

The company handles fertilisers by using closed conveyors, which are equipped with air filters to collect particulates. Such closed conveyors with air filters are also installed at the grain terminal, which began to operate in 2011. The company has erected a 12-meter high soundproofing wall. In implementing legislative requirements, ozone-depleting substances are also recorded and controlled.

In 2015, KLASCO took care of the rainwater treatment plants on the site of the port of Klaipėda to make ensure that only clean water comes into the port area.
